Absence Makes the Process Grow Fonder?

1354628_31602485
I'm sorry!

I'm really sorry! I've dropped the ball...

I know that I've been off the radar for some time and this is a short post to let you know what's happening. In the last 6 months I've been working on a large business transformation project which really has sucked me dry both physically and mentally.

Overall it has been a great experience but it hasn't been without its ups and downs (like most projects). I've had the joy of playing a major part in getting the project funding approved, gone through the pain of running process re-design workshops 4 days a week for a month and the joys of modelling swimlane EPC's in ARIS amongst a thousand other things. Unfortunately this, aligned with having our 4th child back in March and publishing my cafe ninja book meant that something had to give - and this blog was it.

But the good news is that I'm back. I may be a broken down, overweight wreck with a torn shoulder blade muscle (thanks workshops) but I'm the only process ninja you've got. The good news is that I have some big plans for 2012.

Firstly I have launched a Sydney based recruitment agency specialising in the supply of process staff. Secondly I have started on my first process book, provisionally entitled "The Process Revolution". It's going to be the type of book that the grey bearded process academics will despise. I love that.

But most importantly the experiences I've gained on my recent transformation project have given me a huge amount of material that I will be telling you about over the next few months. In keeping with my new manifesto, this blog will seek to teach rather than preach.

The Ninja is back...

The Process Ninja Blog Manifesto

578462_80688802
Recently I've been reading a lot of blogs of all different types.  Sometimes I love a blog one week and hate it the next - why? Inconsistency

You may not realise it but when I write this blog I'm very careful to stick to a number of my own personal rules so I've decided to share those with you today. Think of it as a policy or a process that my blog follows:

  1. Only I ever write articles for this blog. Never, ever will I let anyone else write an article for it. When you read this blog you'll always be reading my words. If you want someone else to write articles on your blog you may as well not have started one in the first place.
  2. I'll never put advertising on this blog (except my own!)
  3. This blog remians 100% impartial. If I say I like something it's because I like it, not because someone has bought me lunch or given me a big cheque.
  4. This blog is not my creative outlet. You won't find me writing articles in novelty styles because I want to display how clever I am.
  5. This blog is about process - it's a niche blog. It will always be a process blog. I stick closely to those boundaries.
  6. I freely admit that this blog's purpose is not only to explain process concepts, but it is a form of marketing my services (to build trust with potential clients).
  7. This blog is methodology and technology agnostic. Whilst I might rave about new software and new methods from time to time, I am 100% open to new things - all styles served here.

Cheers,

TPN

Why I'm Bored of Theory and What the Future Holds for this Blog

1339184_82334147
I'm so bored of theory I can't even begin to explain. After yet another dull, lifeless BP Trends snoozefest newsletter this month I decided it's time for action.

I read a lot of BPM blogs, and more often than not I'm reading about what we should be doing and what BPM can achieve. It's starting to get tedious reading the same old stuff about how we're a misunderstood, under-achieving discipline that can solve all of the business problems of the world. There are enough blogs out there wallowing in theory without this blog adding to it.

In short I've decided to change the focus of this blog. I'll be leaving the theory up to others from now on. What this blog will now focus on are pratical tips and tools to perform process improvement. Real-life applications of techniques to actually do work, not just talk about it.

My intention over the next 12 months or so is to blog regularly on this topic, thereby creating enough content to be able to put it all together into a book. I would love to hear from others out there regarding their own tips and experiences. If I like your tip it will likely also end up in the book (with your consent, of course).

I'm also planning on doing more tutorial style videos as well as some podcast interviews with process people who are able to pass on some tips.

So expect some pratical advice coming your way soon, but in the meantime get your practical hats on and share your tips!

Cheers,

TPN

And this is why you haven't been hearing from me...

Blog
Hopefully by the time you have started to read this short post you will have already noticed that The Process Ninja Blog has undergone some major surgery. As a commitment to my customers (you!) I have taken time and opened my wallet (very painful for a Scotsman to do!) and the result is the wonderful new version of the blog you see before you. I have to say a big thank-you to Chad Everett from Everitz Consulting for doing such a magnificent job on the blog re-design.

Unfortunately this has taken up a lot of my time and therefore I have struggled to keep up my regular posting schedule - but fear not, I am now back into the fold and my itchy fingers need to feel the keyboard regularly once again. I have some great posts lined up which I believe will continue to challenge thinking about BPM and keep you informed about the latest trends.

Thanks for being patient.

What would you like from The Process Ninja in 2010?

Qm For the last few months I have been banging on about the customer experience and I have just realised that I have failed to execute on my own customer centricity project.

So without further ado I'd like to know what you want from The Process Ninja Blog in 2010.

I'm leaving it pretty open to you guys (just comment) on this post but if, like me, you struggle to think now and again I've put together a few thoughts...

What would you like to see more of this year?

More of the same / More about new process trends / more rantings about companies / more tips & techniques

What sucks about The Process Ninja?

Not enough articles / too many articles / too negative / ? / writing style

Do you like the blog design?

Yes / No / Needs Improvement

Should I have guest bloggers?

Yes / No

Should I have interviews with process guru's?

Yes / No

These are just some suggested discussion points - I am oipen to any and all suggestions...after all I'm an outside-in customer centric kinda guy.

Look forward to hearing your views...

From Now On When I Mention Any Companies in this Blog...

From now on whenever I mention a company name in this blog I will be contacting them to let them know what I am saying about them (unless, like fantastic holdings they have no means of being contacted). Whether it be good or bad they'll be told.

I'm doing this for a couple of reasons:

1. I don't think it's fair to criticise without giving them an opportunity to respond.

2. Likewise if I am saying nice things this feedback should also be provided so someone can pat themselves on the back and feel good.

3. Usually the responses from companies are either non-existant or hilarious "cut and paste jobs" straight from the bumper book of customer responses. We all need a laugh.

I'll be pasting any of their responses (unedited) into the corresponding post about them and supplying my own responses to their responses.

Look forward to some hearty laughs folks.

Who am I and why am I doing this?

Shapeimage_2 It's been almost a year since I started this blog, so I thought now is a timely moment to talk about why I write this blog and who I actually am. The blogs subscription base has grown considerably over the last year and I expect it to grow considerably over the next year.

The world BPM community may be a relatively small place, but it has huge power to effect change on organisations - and one of my aims is to get in touch with as many of that community as I can. In the words of Seth Godin, I am reaching out to my tribe. Having this blog has given me the vehicle to meet a lot of process people - some I can help, some help me - but I always have a good time meeting them. Note: if you are ever in Sydney and you invite me for a coffee or a beer, I will ALWAYS accept (particularly if its beer).

So, I suppose I write this blog to achieve that, but also because I like to write, and it's easiest to write about something you know. It's also easier to write about something you enjoy. I do enjoy my occupation - I'm lucky in that respect (although I continually moved toward doing the things that I enjoy throughout my career). I started this blog because I felt I could bring something a bit different to the table - something practical that people could immediately relate to.

I also write this blog because (to be brutally honest) it's a good way for me to promote myself, my business (www.Ninjaconsulting.com.au) and to get a foot in the door. I always tell people that having a blog about what you do for a career is like having the opportunity to get an interview without having to go to the interview - it's a poster for your expertise and your passion. I am always looking to make connections and get consulting work, so if you need me, drop me a line.

So that's why I write, but who is The Process Ninja?

I'm a 35 year old guy - married with 3 kids under 3 (work that one out!) - I live in the fabulous city of Sydney, Australia. I was born in Knutsford, England but my parents are Scottish and I grew up in the town of Barrhead near Glasgow in Scotland. I did relatively well at school, went on to study Marketing at The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow before I studied a postgraduate diploma in Hospitality Management. I moved to Sydney in 1997 where I met my wife. We returned to the UK for a couple of years where I worked in IT before moving back to Sydney in 1999. I worked in BA and IT related roles until 2002 when I bought a cafe, almost killed myself running it (and turning it into a process centric business) before I plunged back into the corporate world in 2004. I have worked in Business Process Roles since then.

Whilst I work full-time in process I'm also the Marketing Director of my parents underfloor heating company in the UK. I'm also writing a book about buying a cafe as well as starting a hospitality consulting business (The Cafe Ninja). I'm also currently renovating an investment property. I like to keep multiple fingers in multiple pies! Adding all that to three young kids you can see why I don't get much free time...

But when I do there are a few things I love doing: watching my beloved Glasgow Rangers, drinking wine, eating good food, cooking (good food), listening to good British rock music. I'm also totally obsessed with researching my family tree.

So that's a summary of my aims for the blog and who I am. I'd love to find out more about you all and (where possible) to meet you. So why not drop me a line or give me a call to say hello - it will be most welcome.
